Dog Bed Essentials
Sleeping with your dog is generally not a good idea and may often cause dominance problems. Not only that you have a different sleeping pattern with your dog but he may also bring into your bed dirt, mud, ticks and fleas, and everything in between. These are some of the reasons why you should buy your dog his own bed- to provide him security and to keep him calm and well-adopted with his own place.
What makes a dog bed? Actually, it can be anything from rugs to foam to fully built four-poster dog bed. Interestingly, some dogs prefer the smooth floor. To determine which type of dog bed your dog may feel comfortable with, observe the usual places he goes for rest.
The dog bed you bought him when he's still a puppy may no longer fit him or it may have been destroyed or crumpled into lumps of foams, cloth and cushion that no longer provide your dog the comfort he needs. The following criteria are gathered to help you eliminate problems such as these:
+ Consider the size of the bed. Consult your veterinarian for the maximum size and weight of your puppy if he matures. Determine what the full-grown stature of your dog according to his breed. For larger breeds, it is best to get a dog bed which will allow him to fit exactly, giving him a smaller bed will make him feel cramped and uncomfortable which often leads to finding another spot to rest, like for example your couch or your own bed. On the other hand, for smaller breeds of dog, giving them larger beds will make them feel unprotected and insecure and in effect, they will look for a better place. In the end, size really matters in this issue.
+ For a new puppy, train him to sleep in his own dog bed. Your small pet will need guidance during his early months, establish a routine for which he may identify his own place. Keep his bed in a single place accessible to him (laundry room, living room or doghouse). Don't let anyone, even your puppy, drag his bed into any other place, or else he may never get used with his spot.
+ Choose the materials that are durable. Solid support for larger dogs may be provided by foam mattresses while smaller breeds and puppies are much suited with small dog bed fillings. To help the dog bed last longer, train your pet not to bite into it. Some dogs have the habit of chewing anything they find, in this case provide for them a chewable toy dog as to divert his attention. Nonetheless, you still have to train your dog not to chew his dog bed so you wont have replace his dog bed often. Moreover, to discourage him from doing this action, get his attention everytime you caught him but it is important that you don't punish him.
+ Check if the cover is washable and removable. When washing the cover of the dog bed, use hot water and a mild detergent to eliminate the ticks and fleas. Do this twice a month. Additionally, purchase a waterproof dog bed.
+ Place the dog bed off the busy way, this will reduce the occurrence of unwanted incident like accidents and the likes. Inform the family where the dog bed is kept, this way your dog may be able to rest peacefully in a semi-protected area.
